Chad Edwards saved Cole Rivers' life one day when he pulled him from a flood-swollen and dangerous river. Since that time, Chad has been looking out for Cole, making sure he doesn't flunk his classes and get tossed off the football team. Quietly making sure his reputation isn't ruined. Cole is destined for greatness, a star quarterback in High School who goes on to QB the Tennessee Vols in college. Chad, who wants to go into sports medicine, follows him there and continues to keep Cole out of trouble. It seems that nothing could come between these two friends.
Except, perhaps, Maggie.
Beautiful, talented, compassionate, and full of life, Maggie is perfect. And Chad quickly falls for her. But Maggie falls for Cole. Devastated, Chad has to decide whether to keep his true feelings secret, hurt the two people he loves best, or quietly fade away.

The characters in this book struggle with where God is in their suffering, but remain steadfast in their faith. Church attendance is encouraged, and nightly prayers with the family are present occasionally. Prayer for healing and safety are not uncommon. Discussion is made about people being in heaven when they die. The raw conflict, self-sacrifice, and ensuing depth of character in the protagonist are stunning.
Final analysis:
Things He Hadn't Told Her by Vicky Whedbee is a heartwarming tale of unrequited love. The characters have tragic real-life struggles and deal with them in a faith-filled and realistic way. The settings are immersive, and the dialogue engaging. The author has a talent for drawing on common emotional situations, and depicting them well enough to bring even an old granddad like me to tears. This book covers multiple years of interaction with the main characters. During the first half of the novel, the level of detail in the interactions and experiences of the characters was a bit overwhelming, but it set a gorgeous backdrop for the back half of the story when things really took off. I was well satisfied with the end and thought Vicky Whedbee did an excellent job carrying the reader through. Good plot, excellent characters, raw emotions, and a heartwarming conclusion. Five Stars!

Things He Hadn’t Told Her, by Vicky Whedbee, give us an in-depth look at what goes on in the minds of people trying to make a romance work when there is no way they should feel what they feel. We all think we know what must be experienced or endured to make a romance work best. These characters endure many unexpected ups and downs, especially when one falls in love with his best friend’s girlfriend.
This story builds around a very complicated plot. All along the way, we get to experience the joy and sometimes painful emotions of the characters as if knowing these people personally. The Author seems to have a deep understand of the workings of the mind and emotions when it comes to romance. I wasn’t sure how this plot could end and was surprised by the finale. It was both sad and happy in a rush of mixed emotions. It took the characters a long time and much pain to find the resolution they needed.
If you like tragic romance that is not soupy, but quite realistic, then you may want to read Things He Hadn’t Told Her. It could restore any doubts you have about real romance.
5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional with a strong understanding of the human spirit
Lizzy Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2023
Best friends from childhood, it’s not unusual that Chad and Cole had many things in common. As young men, they meet Maggie and both fall immediately in love with her. But their feelings are not mutually shared as other things throughout their lives have been. And with good reason.
The premise is simple, but life is complicated, and nothing is ever simple. What I really liked about this novel by Vicky Whedbee is the insight she has into human emotions, how people are pulled in so many directions, and that no matter how much we struggle to do the right thing, the answers are never easy.
As one cannot help doing when reading, I put myself in the characters’ places, and I asked myself what I would do. All along, I felt that the author’s perceptions of human nature were spot on, and that she presented this story with great clarity. She told this story with a keen understanding of the human spirit, the struggle we face to be true to ourselves, and the hoops some of us put ourselves through to do what we perceive as “the right thing.”
I loved the way the author took all of the threads and sewed them together. It was a beautiful ending.

“Things He Hadn’t Told Her” is a sweet story about friendship and love. Since childhood, Cole and Chad have been best friends and share living space in college. They meet a woman, Maggie, and they all become fast friends, and then both men fall in love with her. Chad, who is in school to become a physical therapist, has always been the caretaker for Cole, the charming football star. Maggie soon falls for one of these men. The relationship between Cole and Chad is enduring and strong. Maggie is a sweet and sometimes clueless character with a strong faith and loving personality. The story flows through multiple POVs that offer a unique perspective of many characters. Midway through the story, there was a tragic event that changed everything. I was invested in these characters and hoped it would all work out at the end, where there was another twist. A heartfelt story about the power of love and loyalty.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of enduring love

Things He Hadn’t Told her is a story about love. Not just romantic love, but the kind of love that is imbedded deep in your heart that is giving, self-sacrificing, kind, generous, and lasts a lifetime. This is a story about the testing and enduring of love.
Chad and Cole have been best friends since childhood. Very early in their lives, a tragedy tests the bonds of friendship when Chad risks his life to save his friend. That becomes the foreshadowing for Chad’s role in Cole’s life. He becomes his protector, his motivator, his encourager, and his champion. The amazing part of this… it’s appreciated. Cole may take it for granted, but he returns the friendship love just as deeply. They are an unlikely pair. Chad the scholar. Cole the star athlete. They both meet the beautiful Maggie in college and become fast friends. Unfortunately, they both fall in love with her.
What would you endure for love and friendship? Would you do anything to hold on to it, even if it caused you emotional pain?
Ms. Whedbee takes her time to develop these three characters organically. Nothing is rushed. Their emotional journey full of joy and angst is beautifully written. I laughed, cheered, cried, and swooned as the author make me feel every emotion the characters felt. I really enjoyed this heart-felt story. I think you will to.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rides on the roller-coaster of emotions!
Balroop Singh Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2022
Things He Hadn’t Told Her by Vicky Whedbee captures your attention from page one, as it begins with a nerve-wracking incident of two teenagers pledging to be “blood brothers” when Chad saves the life of Cole. It introduces you to loving relationships within affectionate families, awesome friendships, beautiful description of a fairy tale romance and wedding. It has an amazing flow, realistic characters but their story is predictable. It makes you wonder how long should you hold your true feelings; it tugs at your heart and makes you think about the depth of love. Riding on the rollercoaster of emotions, Chad holds his secret in his journal, which plays a significant role in the book.
Vicky possesses an eye for detail; the way she talks about her characters and their dressing style adds another dimension to the visual effects of their appearance. She has a knack of carrying on the conversation for a long time and hold the interest of the reader. Written in a light-hearted style, a mixture of humor and realism makes it pure fun at places: “Cole was preoccupied with picking up more than two grains of rice at a time with his chopsticks.”
However, the book gets melancholy toward the ending and drags on for a long time. I wish Maggie had picked up the vibes, I wish she could have been more perceptive. On the whole it is an interesting book. Highly recommended.

This author goes right to the heart of the story from the beginning. Who will love whom and who will win out. Upon reading the title, I often wondered while reading which 'he' would be the one who didn't tell her the 'things' because, in reality, it could have been either one of the men. The book leads us through joy and heartbreak and will remind many of those youth-filled days when our own wishes and desires either went our way or were crushed. I enjoyed watching the three characters live out the drama. Ms. Whedbee writes an engaging tale, keeping the reader wondering until the very last page, how it will end. Thank you for an endearing tale of love.

I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up Vicky Whedbee’s Things He Hadn’t Told Her. I knew it was a romance, but I didn’t know how much it would move me. As has been noted elsewhere, Whedbee’s novel is an emotional rollercoaster. It might not always keep you on the edge of your seat, but it will keep you snatching tissues to wipe away tears of joy or sadness.
Chad Edwards and Cole Rivers have been best fast friends since childhood. Chad is studious and patient; Cole is the star quarterback who is laser-focused on football. So much so that Cole needs Chad to help him make it through school. Playing pro football is Cole’s only dream and only goal. When boys meet Maggie Thompson while attending the University of Tennessee, both fall in love with her immediately. And we come to know them all intimately as the story progresses.
When Cole announces his intent to marry Maggie, Chad steps aside and hides his own strong feelings for her. Cole never even notices that his friend loves Maggie too; he’s used to focusing on himself. That said, Cole is a likable, relatable character. So are Chad and Maggie. In fact, all the characters we meet in the book are good people. You won't find any antagonists or mean-spirited characters anywhere. That makes this a wholesome read.
The central issue of the story (which I’m not going to reveal) could have been easily resolved if true feelings were simply revealed. But that’s not how real life, real emotions, real guilt work. And Whedbee isn’t writing a short story—Things He Hadn’t Told Her is a family saga that takes us through many years.
The story is told through multiple points of view, which helps the reader maneuver the twists and turns in the plot as we experience the highs and lows of the three intermingled lives over many years. Yes, the plot is somewhat predictable—although only if you hope for the ending that’s finally revealed. That hope is what carries us through the happiness and tragedy that life holds for Chad, Maggie, and Cole. But however confident you might be in knowing how it will (should) end, you won’t know for sure until the epilogue. That’s not an easy task, but Whedbee pulls it off nicely.
One caveat: Be careful if you’re reading Things He Hadn’t Told Her in public. You might find yourself sitting at the dealership waiting for your car to be serviced trying to discreetly wipe away tears in front of people you don’t know. You might even go through a whole box of tissues before you reach the end of the narrative. But you won’t be able to put the book down.

It’s a life or death situation they’ll never forget and solidifies a life-long friendship. The multiple POV approach took me a bit to get used to, but once I did, it enhanced the story and tied my heart to each character. The boys meet Maggie in college and the two-cord friendship becomes three. Inevitably, love emerges. Who will Maggie choose—the football jock or the studious one? I won’t tell you. This was my third read by Vicky Whedbee. It was very different from the Sarah series but I loved it as well. It shows incredible range in the author, delivering the same ingredients I was looking for but in and entirely fresh and unexpected way. A great, wholesome story jam packed with plot turns. Ms Whedbee intuitively knows how a story should evolve and I think one of her greatest strengths as an author is the pacing of character and story development. I don’t think I ever lost track of who was who – she really lets you get to know her characters – or stopped learning about them (nor did I want to) from beginning to end. Beyond that, I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to reveal any spoilers. I recommend you read the book and discover the details for yourself. Vicky is a very talented author… always delivering a wonderfully warm read, there is never anything gratuitous or unnecessary but make no mistake… there is nothing timid about her! What is it like to live with a secret? Chad knows. It is a secret that he lived with and suffered through for years.
Cole is the college jock. He played on the college football team and excelled playing football at the expense of scholastics. He was good… very good. Cole was handsome and was compared to Christopher Reeves in looks and physique. He was good enough to play for a pro football team after he graduated. Chad is the sensitive scholar. He was Cole’s best friend and helped his friend pass his college courses so that Cole could graduate on time.
Enter Maggie. Cole and Maggie hit it off quickly. The three friends spent many hours together sharing a variety of activities.
The story continues after graduation into marriage and a family.
The characters are so well-developed that it only takes a few chapters before the reader gets to know them intimately. They all have strengths and weaknesses. The story continues from their shared time in college, sorority charities, picnics, and friends and family. The reader learns of intimate feelings, triumphs, and failures. The author weaves a tale of successes, failures, love and pain, and fulfillment and emptiness. It is an engrossing story and a wonderful read.

THINGS HE HADN'T TOLD HER by Vicky Whedbee is a fictional story about three people from Knoxville, Powell High, UT Football, and Titan Football. Chad and Cole have been best buds since first grade. As students at UT, Chad is a sports medicine student, and Chad is none other than the star quarterback for the Vols. They're practically inseparable, but Chad is the studious one, and Cole "just wants to play football" the rest of his life. They both suddenly fall in love with the same young lady, Maggie Thompson, a student from a farm in Parrottsville, TN, but Chad never lets his love for Maggie be known until it is too late; Cole makes the proverbial touchdown with Maggie. Chad has kept a journal since high school, so the only relief for his heart's pain is on those pages. Very serious events come into the lives of the three, and the outcome looks very uncertain, until Maggie finally learns, many years later, the things he hadn't told her. It's a pretty good story. I thought it had a little too much description, but the story was a sweet one.

This book is the first book written by Vicky Whedbee, a high school classmate of mine, and it was a quick and easy read. This is a good heart touching story of life, love, and, great friendship. The story follows two friends Chad Edwards and Cole Rivers, beginning in grade school. Later in life, their friendship circle expands to add Maggie Thompson. Only problem, although they all love each other and stay friends, secretly, Chad is saddened and delighted when his two best friends marry. This is the story of their lives. The story is fairly straightforward, although the teaser hints at maybe a dark secret hidden, the secret wasn't quite what I thought, but the author gives an equally interesting alternative to what I expected.

Things He Hadn't Told Her by Vicky Whedbee is a love story with a twist. This novel follows the story of three people and how their lives mesh. Cole and Chad have been best friends for almost all of their lives. Cole is a big, sporty guy fond of football while Chad is the smaller, serious, and more studious type. In spite of these personality differences, they are the best of friends and have a long history of sharing each other’s lives. As young men, both of them meet Maggie and develop feelings for her. However, Maggie falls in love with one of them and they even go on to build a life together. What is the dynamic between these three when two of the three become a couple? Will Chad and Cole’s friendship be tested? Does anyone have any regrets? This love triangle, with twists and turns along the way, forms the plot of the novel.
Things He Hadn't Told Her is a good love story, but it is certainly not a typical one between two people. Here, three people are involved and things do become complicated. I felt that the character portrayal was maybe a bit on the simplistic side, with not many nuances or shades of grey. Indeed, Cole, Chad, and Maggie all come across as lovable, good-natured people with not a mean bone in their bodies, which at times did feel a bit unrealistic. I wonder if a real love triangle of this kind may bring out people’s flaws or their ugly side a bit more. Still, that doesn’t take away from the overall story and writing which is engaging and makes for a light, fun, interesting read. For fans of the romance genre, this is a love story with a twist that they would probably enjoy.

The book was very well written for a new author. However, there really wasn't much of a plot. I like a little suspense in a book, but you pretty much knew what was going to happen. The beginning lead me to think there was some deep, dark secret that would come out. When I reached the half way point, I realized that was not going to happen. I just skimmed through the last half.

This romance fiction was very sweet. It follows the main character, Chad on his life's journey and its fickle deviations. This story is out my usual fantasy realm of reading and I'm glad I branched out. The classy romance in this book was a breath of fresh air. I held my breath a few times and there were certainly sad points but overall, a great read. My only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5, was it didn't capture my full attention until halfway through. The build-up was slow for me but it didn't take away from its satisfying conclusion. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the two getting together but then it just seemed right.

Sarah's Song
It’s the 1940s, in rural East Tennessee, Appalachian country. For most everyone, there is only work, and possibly church, if there’s one nearby. People rise before the sun is up, work hard, go to bed early, and rest in church on Sunday. Little chance for much else to happen. Right?
So, why would keeping one little secret for over sixteen years be so important? What could possibly have happened, that could change the lives of so many people, if the secret were to be revealed?
There are only three people alive that know the answer to that question.
For now.

WOW~ I don't know where to start. I love books about the past, even before my time.
This book starts in 1940 with the most loving family. You will fall in love with all of the
characters and detest the violence of the villain! I loved the way they lived, how they built,
their schooling, attending Church, how they cooked and ate. There's even a couple of amazing Recipes in the book as the girls were learning to cook dinner. There are so many "happy, feel good" moments in the book, then a bit of sadness when things take a turn. There's a beautiful surprise ending as
everything wraps up. No cliffhangers, that said, I'm dreaming of a sequel anyway. I want to
go back to these characters. I will be reading this book again. There isn't many I will read a
second time. I do not do spoilers but I seriously think you will love this book of life in East
Tennessee back in the '40s, '50s. I immediately bought the author's second book!

Amie Gabriel September 16, 2019 Format: Kindle Edition
I expected to like this book. It seemed a warm and cozy read that I could disappear into at the end of a stressful day; a literary equivalent of “Calgon, take me away!”(for those of us old enough to know the reference!) I’d finished reading “Where the Crawdads Sing”, which I’d loved, then another book, which I didn’t, and I wanted something to bring back the feeling I’d gotten from Delia Owens book. That’s when “Sarah’s Home” came to my attention. From the description on the back cover, I was quite drawn to it but discovered it was the second in the “Sarah” series, “Sarah’s Song” being the first. So I ordered Sarah #1, holding off on Sarah #2 until after I’d formed a solid opinion.
As expected, I liked the book from page one. I found myself immediately interested in the plot and characters. What I didn’t expect was to become so increasingly involved with their lives, invested in the choices they made and those that were made for them, nor did I anticipate the twists and turns of the plot! Several I did NOT see coming... not an easy feat with me! I was pleasantly surprised that, despite the cast of characters being plentiful enough to keep me interested, and the story rich and multifaceted, the author, Vicky Whedbee, so skillfully introduced them at such a thoughtful pace, that I had no trouble following along or keeping track of who was who. I was further surprised at how deftly this story walks the line of being that cozy warm read without shying away from tackling difficult issues head-on.
Vicky Whedbee is a gifted storyteller. I recall no gaps in the storyline, the perspectives of the various characters, like the patchwork quilt on the cover, filling in all the blanks, tightening the narrative, and bringing it together beautifully. It’s really well done.
I truly wish her books would become a tv series. The characters are so vividly described I’m already trying to figure out who should be cast as whom! Suffice to say that book two of the series, “Sarah’s Home”, as well as Ms. Whedbee's other book “Things He Hadn’t Told Her” are on their way to me as I write this!! Like I said, this book surprised me. I expected to like it but I didn’t expect to love it as I do.

Sarah’s Song is a beautifully written story about the lives of the Jenkins’ family and their friends and neighbors in rural Hurricane Hollow, Tennessee in the 1940’s and 1950’s. In the prologue, Ms. Whedbee brings heart-pounding suspense, tragedy, and heartbreak into our first glimpse of the family. This one screen sets the stage perfectly and has the reader immediately invested in the fate of the Jenkins family.
Sarah is the oldest child of Carl and Rebecca Jenkins. After their deaths, she and her siblings moved in with their Papaw (Samuel) who lives near nearby. Sarah takes over the “mother” role for the household. To say life in this rural community is harsh is an understatement, but despite challenging circumstances and the rural environment, this family has an unbreakable bond.
The author does an amazing job of describing the day-to-day tasks, struggles, and challenges of living in this remote area without running water, electricity, or telephones. The dependence of survival came from their own hands with hard work. I could feel the heat of the sun and the tired muscles from the men plowing the fields all day. The gaiety of the woman teaching the younger girls how to can or bake a special cake was uplifting. It was like being a part of every scene that was so vividly written. The love, the joy, the heartbreak, the hardships, the injustices, and the generosity of community… I felt them all.
The one word that comes to mind to describe this story is authentic. From the characters, the descriptions, the actions, the emotions, to the individual and community beliefs. All authentic. Having a mother and father who grew up in rural north Alabama, I can relate to much of this story. I truly enjoyed Sarah’s Song and highly recommend it. This story will lift your heart and give you a new understanding of what really matters.

Set in the 1940s – 50s, there is much to love about SARAH’S SONG. From the rich seasoning of regional dialect, to the wonderful descriptions of family life at Hurricane Holler in Appalachian Tennessee. Home cooking with regional dishes, tamales potato stacks, and pies flavour the narrative. Pies that tend to go missing, but always mysteriously replaced by a good deed. Brilliantly drawn characters populate the story, from the evil Zeke Kufner, a man castigated and thrown out of town to become a pig-breeder, to a Cherokee Indian boy, abused and raised as a slave after his parents perished in a bitterly cold snow storm. A secret from decades before gently ferments until finally bursting into a grand finale when the truth is out.
A full-length fictional novel of contemporary modern history. Beautifully written, and highly recommended five-star reading.

At some point in time, every human being that walks this earth will experience tragedy and misery. There is simply no escaping it. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was correct when he penned:
“Be still sad heart! And cease repining. Behind the clouds is the sun still shining. Thy fate is the common fate of all. Into each life, some rain must fall.”
Since hardship is indeed inevitable, the real question then becomes how will we react when confronted by it. What will help us through so that we can once again see the shining sun?
For many, love and family can be the anchor that keeps us from drifting away in the storm. It is a steady and unwavering presence that provides comfort and support when we fear all is lost.
In author Vicky Whedbee’s novel, Sarah’s Song, we are able to see such concepts in action. This is a must-read for anyone who relishes a masterful narrative that delves deep into the genuine complexities of the human condition.
Sarah’s Song is set in a rural East Tennessee community in the 1940s. It is a land where the sun rises early and hard work is always the order of the day. It is here that tragedy befalls a young family as their homestead is deliberately burned to the ground by a callous and cruel man. After losing their parents in the fire, four young siblings are forced to flee and take refuge with their grandfather.
While this is all happening, another young family is struggling to navigate the harsh natural elements and make it back home to the Cherokee reservation. The brutal conditions end up leaving their young son vulnerable to the whims of a malevolent man.
Amidst such a backdrop of tragedy and heartache, a tenacious resilience begins to take hold in all the various characters. However, there is a secret that lies buried that only three people know about. What will happen if this secret comes to the forefront and is exposed to all? Can the power of love and family overcome the evil that lurks unseen? Or has the time finally come to accept the cruel and inevitable fate that has been patiently waiting to claim its victims?
Sarah’s Song has been on my “To Be Read” list for quite some time now. I am so happy that I finally had the opportunity to read it. It is a storytelling masterpiece that enthralled me from start to finish. The author manages to evoke powerful emotions in the reader right from the outset and does not let go! The plot is heartbreaking in one moment, only to become uplifting the next. It is undoubtedly a powerful reading journey that contains the elements of suspense, mystery, and Christian romance, all in one spellbinding tale!
Further, the plot of the novel is wonderfully supported by a cast of dynamic and realistic characters. The author carefully constructed characters that feel real, complex, and authentic. They all have their own strengths, flaws, and unique experiences that shape their journeys throughout the tale. From the dependable, yet somewhat forlorn, Sarah, to the steadfast, albeit occasionally hot-headed Tommy. As the novel progressed I became completely invested in their growth and transformations. In regard to my personal favorite, I would have to say that Samuel stands out for me. In many ways, he is the glue that manages to hold everyone together. A true hero in many ways.
Overall, this novel receives my highest recommendation. I simply could not put it down. It made me laugh as well as cry. I definitely look forward to reading the follow-up book, Sarah’s Home, in the near future!

Sarah is a deep character, and one that I enjoyed finding out every facet about. I've become a big fan of historical fiction in recent years, and Vicky Wheedbee doesn't disappoint. Most of the time when reading a story from the 1940's, regardless of location, it's all about the war. I liked that I had a rare chance to read about life in the time and real people with real stories. It's a rare chance in novels.
The setting of Tennessee was one that I'm familiar with having grown up in the area, and I enjoyed the description of the area. The characters were well defined, and the outcome wasn't easily predicted in a lot of ways. So many times, when reading a family saga, I find that it's either too much happy or the reverse. Vicky finds a great balance and leaves the reader feeling good in the end no matter how horrific things might have been at another point in the story.
I found the the story of Sarah's Song left me feeling good about the world, even though there is a lot of bad in the world as well. Thank you Vicky Wheedbee! I can't wait to read more of your stories!

Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee
I did not expect to like this book. When I first got it, I made an initial judgment that it was “chick lit” and I don’t like romance stories. Well there is some romance but overall it is a tale of survival in a time when I was unaware surviving was so hard. The book is set in Hurricane Hollow, Tennesse, and starts in 1941. It is a family saga.
My captivation by this book was the realization of how different life was for people in those hills at a time when I was thinking that life in a steel town was tough. My family would vacation at an Uncle’s cabin in the mountains in the 1950s. There was no running water, no electricity, and an outhouse. We thought we were rugged living that way for a week. The characters in this book lived like that normally. The lack of civilized amenities the characters had, which I took for granted as a child, astounded me.
The family relationships and close ties to others in the community were more familiar. Whedbee did a marvelous job portraying a family, a community, and a time. The Grapes of Wrath came to mind when I read this book and considering it was at least five decades ago that I read that book, I have no idea if my comparison is accurate.
Some of the cooking scenes could have been shortened or accurate recipes could have been included.
I was surprised to be delighted by this book but I was truly smitten!
I recommend it.

Sarah steps up to care for her siblings after a fire ends her parents’ lives. Her beloved Pawpaw, Samuel, takes in the orphans and gives them a caring refuge. Underneath the calm surface, simmers secrets and pain, as well as wishes for revenge. Still, the family stands together through work and hardships. Rural Tennessee is the locality where this family saga unfolds.
Ms Whedbee is a gifted writer and forms a plot arch that draws the reader in from the first fiery moment to the end. Her portrayal of the main characters’ deep faith rings true, and her knowledge of the period (the nineteen forties to the fifties) comes across on every page. This isn’t a dry history lesson. Neither is it a sob story. I think it fair to say that the antagonist is as vile as they come. We meet and get to adore personalities that are true to life.
I admire the way Ms Whedbee uses the local vernacular to add verity and spice to her writing in the flawless dialogues.

Vicky Whedbee is what I characterize as an intuitive writer. She has successfully woven heartfelt character-driven subplots within her main story, adding depth and richness. You’ll feel challenged to choose what aspect of the book appeals most. The setting, the perfect mountain dialect pitch, the beloved characters, or a well-crafted plot. It’s all there waiting. Sarah’s Song offers plenty to savor with mystery, romance, life lessons, and abiding faith. It’s a novel brimming with high emotion, and you’ll feel it reading every page.
The hard mountain life that somehow back then folks made fulfilling stuns. There’s a lingering sadness that trails each chapter depicting the truth of life in those days. You admire the grit these families hold to. It’s a contrast to today’s world. Life lessons abound about what caring for your neighbors really means. Here’s my favorite line from wise Samuel talking to his troubled grandson to give a sense of meaningful writing. “When things go wrong, son, don't go with them.”
The author is calling her readers to a higher purpose. Tension and worry build as one mystery wraps around another. You don’t dare put the book aside until you make sure things get worked out properly. Translation: Fill your oil lamp.

"I’m gonna show them!" he thought. "Show them what happens to anyone who messes with Zeke Kufner! Oh how I hate them! They think they’re so high and mighty! Runnin me outta town! Causin me ta be shunned!"
The minute you start reading Vicky Whedbee’s virtuoso mid-twentieth century-set tour de force of life in impoverished rural Tennessee you are inexorably drawn into what is a masterpiece of storycrafting woven in a way only a wonderfully gifted wordsmith truly can. Who is Zeke? Why is he so mad at the Jenkins family? What is he going to do? All these questions and more are answered as the story, spanning several decades unfolds before your eyes. I don’t use the noun lightly either because you literally can see the corn bread with its extra special ‘secret ingredient’ being prepared in the kitchen and hear young Caleb’s beautiful sermon in the schoolhouse, astonishing the congregation who thought him incapable of such an achievement. Borrowing a phrase from the book, the story is genuinely one you could label “groceries for the soul”.
Like John Steinbeck, Vicky Whedbee convincingly uses vernacular language to describe the way the characters think and speak. The colloquial terms add an air of authenticity articulating the home-like atmosphere; but she then takes her storycrafting to the next level by varying the dialectal intensity from character to character adding yet another dimension to the story, giving it its own unique and awesome voice. I particularly liked Sarah’s sociolect soliloquy lamenting the passing of her mother and father but then, almost like a prayer filled with love, hope and determination promising to look after her brother and sisters to the best of her ability. Her switch from daughter to mother in the face of such stark and suffocating hardship mark her as a true heroine but also adds a tragically ironic twist to the story which came like a bolt from the blue later on in the book.
Another hero in the novel is Pawpaw Samuel, Sarah’s paternal grandfather. He takes the orphaned children under his wing, and together with Tommy, Sarah’s younger brother works “from before sunup till after sundown,” to help ends meet. His wisdom throughout the storyline arch is one of the mainstays throughout and his comment, “you can’t shake hands with a clenched fist” was I thought, particularly poignant and symbolically juxtaposed on a parallel story thread of forced labour and captivity imposed on a young Cherokee boy, thus marking polar opposites of good and evil.
Another stand out for the tale was how brilliantly interspersed with the excellent dialogue were the well-researched references to early pop culture and products of the 1940s to the 1950s. Mentions of film stars such as James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor as well as allusions to the Chattanooga Bakery moon pies and R.C. Cola evoking the famous “Big Bill” Lister song are scattered throughout the story making the reader feel they truly have taken a totally terrific trans temporal time trip. In conclusion, Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee is an awesome journey. Buy. Read. Enjoy. Then read again to catch all the little bits you might have missed the first time round. Then read again just to immerse yourself once more in the beauty of Hurricane Holler, Tennessee.

I instantly became attached to her characters. The story resonated with me, which is a testament to how Whedbee integrates a strong sense of setting and atmosphere into her work. It felt as if the characters were real – so honest were the descriptions and mood evoked throughout.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I will say that this story has fantastic suspense!
I highly recommend Sarah’s Song.

Review of Sarah’s Song
The novel’s setting is Hurricane Holler, Tennessee, and the time frame of this story is the 1940s until the 1950s. I love to read Historical Fiction because it’s communing with those who lived in the past. there are many positive elements that make up good, solid writing. The author has a wonderful innate gift for storytelling that immediately draws the reader in with a scene of revenge. The narrative builds from there to include all of the obligatory scenes necessary to make this piece come alive and develop into a whole, well-managed, and enjoyable work of fiction.
Vicky Whedbee has given us a heart-warming tale with a Christian focus assembled of true-life events. Her book’s world-building is compiled of interesting characters replete with family values, responsibilities, sorrows, and the thread that binds all familial relationships—love.
I especially appreciated the kitchen and cooking scenes of the womenfolk, reminding me of the intricate steps in making tamales, and that they all did some kind of needlework. I found it delightful and true-to-life that everyone had vegetable gardens and farm animals and were basically self-sustaining famers. One of my favorite characters is Millicent—her anguish and longing for motherhood—hit the bull’s eye on the target! Another well-rounded character is the Cherokee boy/man Jericho/Adohy and his plight, which is rendered pitch-perfectly. Then there is lovely little Faith and her palliative gift that the author paints realistically as well as the poignant double wedding scene.
After reading the Acknowledgments, I can attest that the author’s father would be immensely proud of his daughter and her novel. Brava!

The author masterfully describes what daily life was like in the 1940s in rural Tennessee, adding to the story an atmosphere and setting so vivid that they become a supporting character in the Jenkins family story.
I love the lightness, subtlety and at the same time the drama with which the story unfolds, connecting the reader to each scene and making us feel the emotions of each character deeply.
Congratulations to Mrs. Whedbee for writing such a beautiful book!

This book is the first of Vicky Whedbee’s that I’ve read but it won’t be the last.
Oh what a delight it was. Well written, descriptive and emotive, it paints a picture of life in the rural Appalachian area that is as far removed from my own lifestyle as chalk and cheese and therefore fascinating. But more than that, it’s charming. The story draws you in, in such a way that you can’t help but fall in love with the characters. The use of purposely misspelt words to convey the sound of the local dialect is genius. It absolutely allows the reader to hear that peculiar accent in their heads as they read. Loved that aspect and kudos to Ms Whedbee for that alone.
However, more kudos to her for drawing vivid pictures of life in the 1940s and 50s of Tennessee together with a story that squeezes the heart and fills the eye. It’s sweet, it’s evocative and it’s life - in all it’s heartbreak and happiness, in its resilient hope and steady faith of community. I am so looking forward to reading more from this lovely writer.
Without giving any spoilers, I highly recommend you read this and more from this talented author.

Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee is a twisted web of pain, hardship, and death. I never knew what was going to happen next and for a long time, it was mostly bad. The antagonist, Sarah’s father, is as bad as they get. Vicky slowly and carefully untangled the web and by the end of the book, everything was clear. The story will definitely pull at your heartstrings. The mystery and suspense kept me turning the pages. I constantly caught myself holding my breath.
On the downside, the book could have been edited a little better especially the overuse of commas but this didn’t take away from the story. This is an excellent novel and I recommend it highly to anyone who loves a skillfully crafted battle between good and evil. Grab a box of Kleenex first.

This is the first book I've read by this author. She hooked me with a tragedy right from the start and then wove an incredible story from there. The story is centered around Hurricane, Tennessee in the 40's through the 50's. I had always imagined life to be simpler during that era, but the more I read, the more I realized I was wrong. Things were a lot tougher and you had to be strong, resilient, and a hard worker to survive. In the midst of that way of life, there was kindness, love, and generosity. There were a few stories within the book, but they all tied together. There were adversities and secrets, but also great moments of joy. I loved all the characters but my favorite was Faith. I could relate to her in so many ways.

Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee is a charming story full of heart with just enough suspense to keep you reading. It’s a great read full of rich history and fantastic characters. I don’t often pick up historical fiction, but I’m glad I did with this one. Here’s why…
The story is set in 1940s Appalachia in a small rural town. After tragedy hits one family, Sarah must hold together the rest of her family, but she’s keeping a huge secret that threatens the harmony of said family. Jericho is a Native American whose adoptive father is an abusive prick who keeps him locked away. He has no idea what the meaning of family is. Each story is intertwined beautifully, though I don’t want to give too much away.
I enjoyed the wonderfully written characters, but the setting here steals the show. Whedbee gives such care and detail, which is so important for a good historical fiction story. There is some romance here as well, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens to these characters in the subsequent sequels.
If you are looking for a good, clean book with strong Christian themes and a ton of heart, Sarah’s Song is for you. The ending is amazing, and I did not see that twist coming! I highly recommend this one.

Review for Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee
This terrifically charming work is an ode to a place called Hurricane Holler, Tennessee, somewhere outside of Knoxville. The setting is from the 1930s until the mid-1950s, with an in-depth look at a remote and beautiful place of nature and its residents. The central focus is one family on the farm, with the simple mountain life. We have a really spooky opener of mindless hillbilly revenge ending in tragedy. Our main character and surviving family winds up living at grandpa’s farm. A second overlaying tale of tragedy in a suffering Cherokee family is quickly introduced. These tales make a strong open for a book whose only flaw is definitely not the beautiful writing, but the overlong page count. There are parts that drag and an easy 25 page reduction would have made this a classic piece of Tennessee literature. Still this is a beautiful tale where things like children getting a new dog, farm living, coming of age, first jobs, southern mountain Christianity, love, charity, community bonds are explored fully against a backdrop of evil in human slavery, rape, violence, and inexplicable madness. The author throws in wonderful southern recipes for cornbread and other specialties. There is a great example of a Sunday morning testimony meeting at church, and scripture is used in perfect connotation, as in the rest of the story. The book has a melodic theme of how simple mountain people lived in those days with a purpose of common consent to help others as part of the self, an extension of the self in happiness. The subplot of the Cherokee Indian teen living wild on the periphery of the community is told with an endearing majesty of compassion. There is an exploration of depression after a tragedy and the kind of downtrodden funk it places on an entire community. But life moves on and people return to new challenges as is meant to be. We rise again to live. There is a glorious depiction of an innocent young romance that is inspiring, and not uncommon for the times and the place, which makes for a lovely conclusion to the book. The story rang true for me knowing some of the area, the struggles of the Cherokee, and having parents that grew up in similar fashion during these times. This book in itself is a testament to Christian love and charity operating in joyful simplicity and celebration, where people and love infused relationships are the focus of a life fulfilled.

Tragedy sets the stage for the lives of four young Appalachian country children in Sarah’s Song by Vicky Whedbee. As they flee their burning farmhouse where they realize their parents have died, they are forced to make their way across the cornfield to where they know they will be loved and cared for – their grandfather’s house. Meanwhile, a young Native American family is trying to get to the Cherokee reservation but are caught in a storm, leaving their young son at the mercy of a mean man.
Vicky Whedbee cleverly fast-forwards through the stages of the children’s lives, relating important events and occasions, adding more characters and developing relationships. The town, Hurricane Holler, also changes and people show their neighborly spirit. The one thing that there is in abundance is love, closely followed by a deep and basic faith, but both are needed to offset some of the heartache that inevitably comes along in life. The family grows and their determination remains a positive factor, even when life isn’t as fair as one would like it to be.
Sarah’s Song is a touching, wonderful look at the resilience of youth when there is love and nurturing, in spite of the trials and tribulations a family may experience. Vicky Whedbee writes beautifully, capturing the colloquialisms of the rural area and also delving deep into the souls and spirits of the characters, most of which possess a special gift. Funny, sad, thought-provoking and inspiring, Sarah’s Song celebrates basic values and touches your soul as you read, making you think about what is really important in life. A wonderful story.

I loved it! It brought out many emotions throughout the tale. Well written and held my attention. I could see the characters in my mind and hear their voices and the way they spoke due to the creative writing Vicky applied. I was sad for Sarah as she had to instantly become the mother figure and grow up very fast. But it also spoke volumes to just how good a job her mother did to prepare for the real world and teach her the essentials. Not everything turns out how we want it to be or how we feel it should be, but with God as your co-pilot, this world and its trials, woes, and abuse is just turbulence that shakes you but will never break you. I also loved the sweet prayers in the beginning! Well done.

This is Vicky Whedbee's interesting follow-up novel to Sarah’s Song and shadows the fate of many of the same characters as the first book of this series. I must admit that Sarah's Home was just as absorbing as the first book, which had a strong impact on me. I felt even more engaged with this story, presented in a scenic manner, whereas Sarah’s Song seemed to have more exposition which distanced me somewhat from the plot. These fictions both paint a wide spectrum of emotion and are certainly worth the read.

This wonderful author has done it again and because she has, she’s made this review difficult for me. You see, my personal rule when I do a review is not to outline or tell the story because, well, you’re going to read the book, aren’t you? Therefore, you don’t need me to spoil the story-telling or plot for you, do you? It’s just how I prefer to do things - I’ll only talk about the writing and whether I think it’s worth reading the book.
However, what am I to say about this second book in the Sarah Series that I didn’t already say in my review of the first one? I’ll end up repeating myself!! But what can one do?
Ms Whedbee, you’ve delighted us once more with a story that’s equally, if not more engaging than the first. Told with a flair that reads with such stylish simplicity yet packing loads of deep emotion, this story expands upon the first book, builds upon its world and draws the reader further into the all too real character’s lives, dilemmas and traumas. You feel their emotions; their pain and joy with every page turned. And you want more.
The author has a way of charming the reader with her word-choice and sentence structure, immersing them into the world she’s depicting so eloquently. I honestly enjoyed every moment of this story and I’m certain that you will too.
Bravo Ms Whedbee, bravo.

Once again, author Vicky Whedbee’s picturesque writing describes the nature, set, and existence of east Tennessee hill country. Great story just like the first book Sarah’s Song.

This is the sequel of Book 1 Sarah's Song and, although it can be read as a standalone, it also deepens the plot and adds to the story told in book 1.
We are presented to new characters that join the story of the Jenkin's family with their traumatic pasts and come to Sarah's Home to heal.
The author weaves the story with humor, hurt, pain, love, suspense, and an unexpected turnaround.
A great read, just like the other books by this author: Sarah's Song and Things He Hadn't Told Her.
I look forward to reading more books from Ms. Whedbee.
5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful story!
By Sugar on January 24, 2021
This is my first book by Ms. Whedbee and I read the second in the series without realizing I missed the first. I'm pleased to say that she did a great job of bringing the new reader into the series without confusing me. The characters were all new to me, but I truly enjoyed getting to know them all. There were a lot of twists and turns in the book that you don't expect, but it keeps you turning the pages to see what will happen next. She fills the story with humor, pain, strife, and suspense, but it's the end that will surprise and please you. The character development was top-notch, and the storyline was believable and gave you the right amount of tension at just the right time.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Sequel That Holds it Own!
By Amie Gabriel on May 21, 2020
I’ll start by saying that I really loved the first book in this series, Sarah’s Song, and very much looked forward to diving into it’s sequel, Sarah’s Home. I was not disappointed. I rediscovered the rich ensemble of characters with whom I became invested in Sarah’s Song with enough recap that was able to pick up where I’d left off several months before. And, although I can’t speak to this with any real athority as I had read the first book, I do think there’d be enough background that Sarah’s Home could be read as a stand alone (although I don’t know why you’d want to – the first book being so good). The development of characters, relationships and storyline are, once again, all set at a very believable pace and the plot twists build up just the right amount of tension and keep the pages turning! Another thing I love about this author is how she’s able to tread that very fine line of telling a warm, wholesome “feel good” story while incorporating some really challenging subject matter with twists and turns that I truly did not see coming! There is a fine line between having something you’re able to count on and being boring and predictable. Vicky Whedbee deftly threads that needle. I could count on this story leaving me feeling warm and satisfied but it did not fail to surprise me!
I purchased this paperback on Amazon France.
5.0 out of 5 stars Grand Tennessee mountain tale of the worth of souls
By Red Butler on November 22, 2020
Author Whedbee does a fine job with this sequel to Sarah’s Song, a tale of the Tennessee mountain folk of the 40s and 50s. The struggles and victories of the Jenkins/Thorntons continues into the 1950s with Sarah’s home in literal sense becoming a way station/ convalescent hospital for the local people. What is striking in the text is the command of the history, the mood, the setting and the vernacular of east Tennessee hill people. The diction is rather masterful encompassing many diverse characters in a given scene. Compared to Sarah’s Song, this one took a while to reach a surprising and very adult conclusion. The ending is the strong suit, but one has the feeling and good sense of the skill and planning of this heartfelt author. The downside is some repetition and slow exposition in pace. As a dyed in wool southern man I understand east Tennessee having spent some minor time in the area, but a great deal of time in the Asheville hills not far away. It always amazes me how much an author shows of themselves in works of this nature. Having many Tennessee folk in my life in the past, this work rings true to their deeply human sensibilities of being caring, honest, direct, with family revelry, humor and food as a centerpiece of hard work to provide. There is a sense of gratitude in the mountain mind that never seems to forget the Creator’s purpose for life. Vicky Whedbee’s work understands and depicts an iconic area and a valuable people of grace and love that I hope never disappear.

Heart wrenching story
Strong story of the people living in Sarah's Home. Millicent's work as she tries to keep the home running was great. Faith and Adohy - the way they came together despite everything was good to read. The others on the place and their story were very well etched and how they looked beyond it was well brought out.
Enjoyed the narration. Liked it.

The plot transition is smooth and captivating. The characters are so very relatable and real. You can lose yourself in the dialect and picture yourself in rural TN. Can't wait for the third one...Loved, Loved, Loved this book. Read the first one "Sarah's Song", then had to get this one!

I have read all 3 of Vicky's books and find her to be a rare talent. This latest is excellent and insightful. It picks up where Sarah's Song left off. The first part is a synopsis of the first one. Vicky's characters are flawed, and real with heart and warmth. You can "see" them as surely as if they were in front of you. She made me chuckle and cry, but mostly she surprised me with twists that I didn't see coming. For someone who has grown up in the South, you probably have the language used by the people in this part of the country. Now I can't wait until she writes another book. You should read Sarah's Song first. It gives you all of the hardships endured by these wonderful people.

Wonderfully written, Vic!! Enjoyed this one almost as much as Sarah's Song. I still prefer the "stand alone" books, like "Things He Hadn't Told Her", but for a sequel, you did a great job! Nice read; still hope to order printed editions of all 3!!

I’m reluctant to say goodbye to these characters that I’ve come to know and care about. This book, like its predecessor, draws you in and holds you there to the end. Well done.

Wow! These characters feel like family. ❤ What a beautiful story! This book is well written and it was one I could not put down! It was nice to submerge into the past - written historically true to the era. There are many twists and turns I didn't see coming! Kept me on the edge of my seat....trying to figure out the mystery. Highly recommend this book. I discovered this author by her first book of the series Sarah's Song. Another GREAT book which got me hooked. This series does not disappoint! ❤

Vicky Whedbee builds yet another heartfelt tale in her fictional town in Sarah’s Home! Millicent Thornton struggles to create a safe haven for the abused and mistreated, a task that is much more challenging than she expected, especially after learning the true identity of one of the residents. As with Sarah’s Song, Whedbee does a wonderful job of creating loveable characters and numerous moments that’ll make you cry! This is a beautiful continuation of Whedbee’s story and I hope there’s more to come!
